Jackson Wallace Goodall, Jr.

October 29, 1938 - July 17, 2025

With heavy hearts, we say goodbye for now to our father and grandpa, Jackson Wallace Goodall, Jr. (86). He passed away peacefully at home on July 17, 2025. Jack was born on October 29, 1938, at Mercy Hospital, to Jackson Sr. and Evelyn Goodall in San Diego, California.

Family and friends loved Jack and remembered him not only for his extraordinary work ethic and leadership skills, but also for his kind and generous heart. His Christian faith is pivotal to his legacy ensuring we will be reunited one day. 

Jack’s education included Euclid Elementary School, Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, and Horace Mann Junior High School. He attended Hoover High School, where he met Mary, his dear wife of 50 years. He enjoyed playing basketball and golf in high school. He was a graduate of San Diego State College and was a Sigma Alpha Epsilon brother. He stayed involved with the University throughout his lifetime. His love of athletics continued, and many of his childhood friends remained close to him throughout his life. His lasting friendships serve as a testament to his character.

Jack started working when he was 9 years old, delivering the San Diego Union and the Los Angeles newspapers. While in school, he sold shoes and office furniture. Upon graduation, Jack worked at General Dynamics for three years before joining Foodmaker, the company that owned Jack in the Box. He worked at Foodmaker for over 30 years, serving as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board of Directors for most of his career.

Jack and his partners took the company private and public, twice, respectively. During his tenure, Foodmaker and Family Restaurants owned brands including Jack in the Box, Chi-Chis, El Torito, Charlie Browns, The Family Tree, The Hamburger House, The Boat House, Monterey Whaling Company, The Hungry Hunter, The Jolly Ox, Tortilla Flats, Carlos Murphy’s, Mountain Jack’s, Taco Jack, Wally’s Burgers & Beers, Coco’s, Carrow’s, Rubens, Tippy Canoe’s Place, and others.

Jack also served as a Board Member for Budget Rent-a-Car, Thrifty & Payless Drug Stores, Ralcorp, Van Kamp’s Seafood, Family Restaurants, Rubio’s Restaurants, Mercy Hospital, and was a Partner in the San Diego Padres. He, along with several friends, founded Grossmont Bank. 

He served on the Boards of Trustees of several nonprofits and charities, including the San Diego State Athletic Board, the San Diego State Campanile Foundation, the Child Abuse Prevention Society, Promises 2 Kids, and the University of San Diego Board of Trustees. And many others.

Jack has received numerous awards for his contributions to the restaurant industry and his charitable work. Jack assisted in the public-private partnership that built the Polinski Children’s Center in San Diego and has remained active in youth, foster children, Christian, Israel, civic, and athletic charities throughout his lifetime.

Jack is survived by his four children and their spouses, Kathy & Rob Hart, Jeff & Carlee Goodall, Suzy Mack, and Mindy & Mike Rundlett, ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and his sister, Sally Garner. The family also wishes to express their appreciation for the love and support of Jack’s close friends, including Kris Jefferies.
